Waltz became a naturalized U.S. citizen in Los Angeles, California, in 1861.  In 1862 Jacob was working the gold fields in La Paz, Arizona Territory, on the Colorado River.  During 1863 he was in the Prescott, Arizona Territory, area when the gold strikes were made. In the spring of 1868 he settled a homestead farm in Swiller’s Mill, Arizona Territory in an adobe house on the north side of the Salt River, with 160 acres near South 14th Street and East Pima Street. Jacob died of pneumonia on September 14, 1872.
