Jacob was born in the Barony of Wurttemberg, Germany not far away on the German side of the Rhine River.His family were affluent tenant farmers. Jacob sailed on the ship; Ville De Lyon, from the Port of Le Havree, France and arrived in New York on November, 12, 1848 along with his father, George Martin Waltz. George and the family moved to Pennsylvania and purchased a small farm on April 23, 1846.Jacob came to live with and work for after his own arrival to America a few years after George. Jacob had an adventurous spirit and could not be tied down on a farm.He enlisted his services on a wagon train bound for California in the September of 1848, and he headed west, searching for the elusive gold strike.
Waltz became a naturalized U.S. citizen in Los Angeles, California, in 1861.In 1862 Jacob was working the gold fields in La Paz, Arizona Territory, on the Colorado River.During 1863 he was in the Prescott, Arizona Territory, area when the gold strikes were made. In the spring of 1868 he settled a homestead farm in Swiller’s Mill, Arizona Territory in an adobe house on the north side of the Salt River, with 160 acres near South 14th Street and East Pima Street. Jacob died of pneumonia on September 14, 1872.
